Free Phone Numbers for Battle.net and Overwatch 2

Some Blizzard games, Overwatch 2 among them, need a phone number on your Battle.net account before you can play. Copy a free number below, add it on Battle.net and read the SMS code in its public inbox.

Free numbers you can try for Blizzard

Pick a number marked Online, then open its page to read the code as it arrives.

These inboxes are public.

Every message sent to a free number is visible to everyone — you do not rent the number or get exclusive access. Never use free numbers for banking, email recovery, or two-factor authentication on accounts that matter. For a fresh number only you can see, get a private temporary number from just a few cents.

How to add a free number to Battle.net

1

Copy an online number

Numbers are shown in full international format. Copy one and note which country it belongs to.

2

Add it to your Battle.net account

Open Account Details on Battle.net, add a phone number, choose the same country and type the rest of the digits.

3

Read the code here

Go back to the number page. The SMS from Blizzard lands in the inbox within seconds, highlighted for copying.

Will a free number work for Battle.net?

Rarely, and it helps to know why. Blizzard lets a phone number sit on only one Battle.net account, and the same number cannot create two accounts for the same game. These numbers are public, so many have already been used for Overwatch 2 or another Blizzard game.

Battle.net also rejects VoIP numbers. If you get an error, try one more number from a different country, then stop. A fresh private number is the reliable way through Battle.net phone number verification.

Blizzard SMS Protect: what your phone number does

Battle.net SMS Protect ties a phone number to your account. Blizzard uses it for:

Game access
Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty ask for a phone number before a new account can play. For Overwatch 2, this is the SMS Protect step.
Feature unlocks
World of Warcraft asks for a phone number before some features, such as the Group Finder.
Account recovery
From the linked phone you can unlock the account, remove a lost authenticator, recover the account name or approve a password reset.
Security alerts
Blizzard texts the number when the account is locked after a suspicious login. On a free number, those texts are public.

Overwatch 2 phone number: who has to add one

Overwatch 2 asks new Battle.net accounts for a phone number before they can play. Blizzard says the aim is to limit how many free accounts one person can make, which cuts down on cheating and toxic play.

When Overwatch 2 launched in 2022, Blizzard dropped the requirement for most players who already had Overwatch on a connected Battle.net account. If your account is that old, you may not need a number at all.

For a new account, the Overwatch phone number must be one that no other account has used for the game. That is why a free phone number for Overwatch 2 usually fails, and a fresh private one goes through.

Free or private number for Blizzard?

A free number is fine for

  • A throwaway free-to-play account
  • A quick look at the Battle.net phone screen
  • One try before you pay for a number

Use a private number for

  • Any account with games you bought
  • World of Warcraft with a subscription
  • An Overwatch 2 account you plan to keep
  • Account recovery and security alerts

Fake phone number for Blizzard? It cannot verify

A fake phone number for a Blizzard account gets nowhere. Battle.net sends a real SMS, and VoIP or internet numbers are refused before the code is even sent.

If you already added a free number, replace it before the account matters. Open Account Details on Battle.net and change the phone number to one you own, so security texts stop landing in a public inbox.

Need a number only you can see?

Free numbers are shared, so some services reject them or show codes to everyone. A private temporary number is fresh, works with 100+ services, and the SMS goes only to you — from just a few cents, with an automatic refund if no code arrives.

Blizzard temporary numbers — frequently asked questions

Why does Blizzard require a phone number for account creation?

To limit how many free accounts one person can create, which Blizzard says cuts down on cheating and toxic play. Games such as Overwatch 2 and Call of Duty ask for the number before a new account can play.

Can I use one phone number on two Battle.net accounts?

No. A phone number can sit on only one Battle.net account, and Blizzard support cannot make an exception. One number also cannot create two accounts for the same game.

Does Battle.net accept prepaid or VoIP numbers?

Prepaid mobile numbers are supported, although some prepaid plans still fail. VoIP numbers are not accepted.

Battle.net says the number is already in use. What now?

Another account already has that number. Pick a different free number, or use a private one that nobody has added to Battle.net.

Is it safe to keep a free number on my Battle.net account?

No. Every SMS to it is public, including security alerts about your account. Swap it for your own number in Account Details as soon as you can.
